Before ever setting foot on campus as an undergraduate student, Jonathan had already been traveling abroad with the University of Cincinnati. After competing internationally in chess and authoring two textbooks on the same topic, Jonathan embarked on his experience at UC. As an incoming freshman in 2009, Jonathan took part in a summer study tour to Nicaragua and that set off a chain of events that he is still seeing the results of to this day.
During his time in University Honors Jonathan has traveled abroad to Chile, France, Spain, and Belgium, to mention a few. He attributes many of his opportunities to the mentorship and support he received in University Honors. He looks at his experiences at UC as catalysts for the next one, such as working with the local Guatemalan community at the Church of Our Saviour, which led to taking courses in political science, which led to immigration advocacy, which led to learning French, which led to his trip to Belgium and then to his most recent honor, being selected as a Truman Scholarship finalist. It is all connected and as Jonathan says, University Honors was in fact “his college experience.” Upon graduation, Jonathan plans on attending law school and focusing on immigration law.
