"Charleston to Hilton Head: Exploring the Low Country in Fiction and Personal Experience"

Travel to South Carolina over spring break
with this winter quarter honors seminar!

Information sessions will be held on Wednesday, October 7, at 12:00 PM and on Thursday, October 8, at 4:30 PM in room 708 Swift Hall.  Both instructors will be available to answer all your questions and provide information on the course.

Winter Quarter 2010 Study Tour Course, 15ENGL397H

This course offers a low-cost opportunity for students in all disciplines to experience the ecology and culture of the Hilton Head and Charleston, South Carolina region, in person and in selected readings by popular author Pat Conroy. Students will spend winter quarter studying the region and selected literature. The course will culminate in a required study tour to Hilton Head and Charleston, South Carolina over spring break.

Study tour dates are Friday, March 19 - Thursday, March 25, 2010 (Friday and Thursday may be travel days, as the group will be driving to and from South Carolina)

Tentative Itinerary (subject to change)
Friday, March 19 - travel day

Saturday, March 20 - Charleston, South Carolina
Middleton Place Plantation tour, free time to explore Charleston sites, graveyard tour of Charleston.

Sunday, March 21 - Charleston, South Carolina
Bus tour of the city, walking tour of the Citadel, tea and talk at mansion on the High Battery, free time/ individual tours

Monday, March 22 - Charleston, South Carolina
"Charleston Sites, People and Topics" Tour, possible lunch at Poogan’s Porch, Citadel campus and Bookstore visit, travel to Beaufort with stop at Old Sheldon Church ruins.                                  

Tuesday, March 23 - Beaufort, South Carolina
Tour of Beaufort, free time, tour of Parris Island, travel to Hilton Head

Wednesday, March 24 - Hilton Head, South Carolina
Tour of Daufuskie Island, free time

Thursday, March 25 - travel day
Students can travel home or choose to remain in Hilton Head (at their own expense) and return home on a different date.                                

Tentative Cost - $600-800** (with grant, only $350-550)
Includes accommodations (with four students per room or condo), tours, shared gas costs, and program fee.

**University Honors will provide $250 for each student, to offset the total cost, so students will actually only be expected to pay only $350-550.

**Students must be in good standing with University Honors and meet our minimum GPA requirement to recieve the $250 grant.

**Costs are based on 15 students. If less than 15 students participate, costs may be higher.

**Costs are approximate since accommodations may be slightly more or less, depending upon type and number of students in the hotel or condo; tour and gas costs may also vary somewhat.

**Total cost does not include food. Note that the stay at Hilton Head will be in condos where students may choose to store and/or prepare some of their own food.
