Spring 2010 Honors Seminar with Study Tour to Italy

38HNRS359H - The Roman Experience This seminar introduces the students in a weekly classroom meeting to fundamental concepts linking art, architecture, engineering, and music. Students will also be introduced to cultural aspects of Italian life and customs, to prepare for the culmination of the class, a nine-day study tour to Rome, Italy that will also include a day in Florence, Italy.
Class will meet Wednesdays from 6:00-8:30pm (note - the meeting day was changed from Tuesdays to Wednesdays) BoK - FA, DC

Expected Travel Dates June 12-20, 2009
Tentative Cost Estimated cost is $3500** per student. This includes airfare, accommodations, breakfast, some ground transportation, and some museum entrance fees.
**University Honors will provide each University Honors student with an $800 grant to offset costs, making each students actual expected cost $2700. Students must be in good standing with University Honors to receive the grant.
Above cost does not include meals (except for breakfast, which is included), subway transportation, taxi transportation, and some entrance fees (any that are not pre-paid). Students will need to pay for these items out of pocket while in Italy.

Tentative Itinerary (subject to change)
Day 1 Depart Cincinnati and arrive in Rome, Transfer and Check into Hotel Introduction to City: the Roman Forum and the Colosseum
Day 2 St Peter’s Basilica, Bernini’s colonnade, the Vatican Museum; Castle St. Angelo
Day 3 Pantheon, Piazza Navona (Bernini’s Fountains),Caravaggio’s Paintings, Mussolini’s Opera House
Day 4 Villa Borghese, Piazza del Popolo, Spanish Steps
Day 5 The Baths and Catacombs
Day 6 The Baroque Church and Baroque Music
Day 7 Modern Rome; the EUR development; travel to Florence in afternoon.
Day 8 Spend the day in Florence, Italy, visiting sites such as the Uffizi Gallery, Palazzo Vecchio, and the Pitti Palace.
Day 9 Depart for Cincinnati; students can divert for additional travel.
