University Honors Program

University Common Reading

In fall semester 2013, the University of Cincinnati introduced a common reading for all first year students. The book being used for all incoming first-year studenta fall 2013 and 2014 is titled Justice: What’s the Right Thing to Do? by Michael Sandel.

The University of Cincinnati common reading provides students an opportunity to read, reflect, discuss, and interact with their peers. By encouraging students to engage in meaningful discussions with others they are able to begin the reflection cycle and better understand why they and others have the opinions they do. This provides a space for all of our students to find commonalities across majors, colleges, and backgrounds.

Students are encouraged to explore the publisher web page for links to media, reviews, and discussions. The University Honors Program has also accumulated resources including an introduction and additional media from the course Mr. Sandel teaches based on his book Justice, which are located below.

You will recieve your copy of the common read book at Bearcats Bound Orientation.

* Justice Discussion Guide.pdf
Above is a discussion guide for Justice created by the publisher, Farrar, Straus, and Giroux.
Above is a playlist of Mr. Sandel's MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) version of his book Justice offered at Harvard University. Each one hour session has a different topic and we encourage you to watch them and consider the topics and viewpoints presented while also reflecting on the justification respondents and you provide to support your position.

There is also a resource page and a series of discussion guides that the Justice course provides to students that take part in the course. We encourage you to consider reviewing them as you read though the book and review the recordings of the course.
