Communities/Special Interest Floors 2007-2008

Residence halls are home to several special-interest and living-learning program options. While all residence hall living is intended and designed to promote student learning and academic success, these choices offer particular advantages in connecting students’ classroom experiences to their daily in-hall experiences.

Special Interest Floors by Description

CECH (College of Education, Criminal Justice and Human Services) Floor:
Two CECH floors---one for women and one for men—are housed in Siddall Hall. This arrangement allows criminal justice majors of both sexes and education majors of both sexes to live in close proximity. The CECH floors will offer programs related to classroom content and professional development in each of the career areas.

CAS (College of Applied Science) Floor:
This floor allows CAS students to live near one another and close to students in other UC colleges with similar academic interests. The CAS floor will be located in Dabney Hall. Women in CAS may also live on the WISE floor (see below). Living in a CAS unit allows for sharing out-of-class experiences with other CAS students.

College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) Floors:
Floors designated for CCM women and men are located in Siddall Hall, near the CCM Village. Residing on a CCM floor allows students to live with and near other CCM students who share similar goals and schedules for class and rehearsals.

Design, Architecture, Art and Planning (DAAP) Floors:
Housed in Daniels Hall, the DAAP floors are coed (men and women in separate rooms on the same floor). A study lounge on these floors is equipped with drafting tables for students’ use. Students who live on DAAP floors appreciate sharing space and working together with other students whose class and project schedules are similar to their own.

Engineering Floors:
Engineering floors allow residents in the College of Engineering or pre-engineering majors to form study groups and to work cooperatively. Programs often include study/review sessions. Engineering floors will be housed in Calhoun Hall (men) and in Siddall Hall (women) with WISE participants (see below).

Health Professions Floor:
Housed in Daniels Hall with the Pathways Learning Community, the health professions floor is open to students in a wide variety of majors. These include all majors in Allied Health, Nursing, and Pharmacy, “pre-“programs in Arts and Sciences, and related associate degree and pre-majors in Clermont and Raymond Walters Colleges. Floors are coed.

Honors and HonorsPLUS:
These units are located in Daniels Hall, Turner Hall, and the new Campus Recreation Center Housing. Floors are coed. Students who request assignment to these floors must be accepted into the University Honors Scholars Program or the HonorsPLUS program in the College of Business Administration. Students in these units are often enrolled in similar courses, and program opportunities include many Cincinnati-area arts and educational events and career explorations, among others.

Pathways Learning Community:
Pathways Learning Community (PLC) is a coed floor in Daniels Hall open to first-year students in Arts and Sciences or University College who have not yet declared a major. Programming on this floor will include career/major exploration events, academic advising, and decision-making skills sessions. Students may also take certain general education courses together, if desired. The emphasis for this floor is on promoting self-knowledge and facilitating exploration of possibilities, not on pressuring students to decide quickly.

 Peace Village:
The Peace Village is a place to create a community dedicated to peace and justice. The commuinity promotes living with compassion for everyone in our residence, and living with actions that promote harmony and justice. Residents will launch programs in reducing local and world hunger, improve religious appreciation, and promote global programs of justice. Residents choosing this community are invited to be peacemakers and to take action in skillful and compassionate ways that strength peace through community.

Quiet Floors:
While all halls and floors have structured quiet hours to observe, these floors are study-intensive. During the week, quiet hours are continual; some limited break is provided on the weekends. Residents on these floors are expected to sign special contracts to uphold the study-intensive environment. This option is available in Calhoun and Siddall Halls.

Transfer/Non-traditional/Graduate:
This lifestyle community is for transfer students who are new to UC, graduate students, and/or students who are 21 years of age or older.

Women in Science and Engineering (WISE):
Open to women in any math, science, engineering, or medical field (or “pre-” programs in these areas), WISE is located in Siddall Hall. Programs include the Women’s Science Series, focused on applying classroom learning to real-world work options, career exploration, and adjusting to collegelevel science classes. Residents also have unique chances to learn about research and internship opportunities.
