Life Events

Major life events – such as birth or adoption of a child, marriage, retirement, termination of employment – enable you to make changes to your health care plans and add or drop eligible dependents from coverage.

When you experience a life event, also known as a qualifying status change, you have 31 days from and including the date of the event to make changes to your benefits. If you miss the 31-day deadline, your next chance to request a change is Annual Enrollment, which is effective the following January 1, or another qualifying status change.  You will be required to provide documentation such a birth certificate, marriage certificate or divorce decree.  Do not wait until the documentation is available to contact UC HR!

In most cases, the effective date of the change of the qualifying status change is the "event date" (such as the marriage or birth date).  However, in some situations (divorce, legal separation, change due to employment), the effective date of the change is the first of the month following the "event date."

A dependent child will automatically be removed from UC's medical, dental and vision plans at the end of the month in which the dependent child reaches the age of 26. Your dependent will receive a COBRA packet regarding continuation of coverage from Chard Snyder. If you have any questions, please contact Chard Snyder at (888) 993-4646.

In the event of divorce an employee must email benefits@uc.edu as soon as the divorce is finalized and he/she has court documentation.  Medical/dental claims paid for ineligible dependents (e.g., ex-spouse or step-children) after the benefits end date will be recalled.  Dependents dropped from the medical/dental due to divorce may be eligible for continuation of the plan(s) through COBRA.  COBRA eligibility begins when coverage under the UC plan(s) end, not the date an employee notifies UC.  Failure to notify UC HR within 60 days of the divorce will mean that former dependent(s) are no longer eligible for COBRA.   Don’t delay in notifying UC Benefits!

  • Name Change: If your qualifying status changes results in name change, you must submit a copy of your new Social Security Card (with your new name) to UC Human Resources.  Contact HROnsestop@uc.edu for assistance.
  • Beneficiaries: A qualifying status change is a good time to review beneficiary(ies) named to receive Life or Personal Accident Insurance proceeds in the event of death.  You may designate or change beneficiaries at any time online via Employee Self Service (ESS).  To designate a Trust as a beneficiary please email benefits@uc.edu.  A will does not supersede a beneficiary designation.
