Associated Press Stephen Liggett, College of Medicine, was quoted about research work he has completed that demonstrated how gene variations caused individual patients to respond differently to a widely-used asthma drug. "This is a step towards personalized medicine. The era of one drug fitting all is probably coming to an end soon," Liggett said. Among the papers the article appeared in was Newsday.
New York Times Wim van Ooij, materials science and engineering, was quoted as an expert on in tire manufacturing in a story concerning the Firestone and Ford Explorer tire recall. Van Ooij was in Akron to present his latest research findings on adhesion of rubber to steel cords.

Marketing News Dave Curry, marketing, was quoted in a story about how consumer goods companies should be looking at the future of business over the Internet.
Business Times of SingaporeNorm Miller, professor of finance and director of UC's Real Estate program, was quoted about the future prospects of American shopping malls in the face of the threat of e-commerce. Miller was in Singapore to present research at a real estate seminar. His comments were also the subject of a column in the paper.
Alumni making newsEmma Kimball, a graduate of the UC College of Nursing, was featured in Denver's Rocky Mountain Newsfor having reached the age of 100. Kimball told the paper of her experiences working at University Hospital (then General Hospital) during the worldwide flu epidemic of 1918.
James Stanley, a graduate of UC's College of Engineering, has been named president and CEO of Howmet Castings. The company is the world's largest manufacturer of precision castings.
Richard (Dick) Cutter III, a graduate of the UC College of Law, has been named vice president and assistant secretary of CTS Corporation.
UC graduate Christiane Mandell has been named head of e-commerce for Bank of America's Global Corporate Investment Banking unit.
Susan Flanagan has been named vice president, mergers and acquisitions for DPL, Inc. in Dayton, Ohio. Flanagan, who previously was director of transaction services for PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in New York, earned her master's degree in engineering from UC.
John Boose, who earned a master's degree in aerospace/mechanical engineering from UC, has been named to the advisory board of Tantia Technologies. Boose is also president of the consulting firm Strategic Leadership Group and is the Robert G. Tointon Distinguished Professor of Technology Management at the University of Northern Colorado.
