Collage-Making, Visit by Olympic Medalist to Mark UC's Body Acceptance Week

The University of Cincinnati Women's Center and the UC Wellness Center will be
marking Body Acceptance Week with a series of events designed to encourage self-
acceptance and reverse the cultural overemphasis on physical looks. The events, free and
open to the UC community, are scheduled for May 15-18 and focus on the
theme "As I Am."
Monday, May 15: 11 a.m.- 1 p.m. "Cut and Paste: The
Media Myth" will allow participants to create a collage that expresses how the media
portrays body image. Where: Old Lobby, Tangeman University Center
(TUC).
Tuesday, May 16: noon. Double 1984 Olympic Gold Medalist in
swimming Tiffany Cohen Adams, who gave up her swimming career four years after
winning her medals to fight the eating disorder bulimia, will speak at an inservice for
educators, coaches and advisers in the President's Dining Room, TUC. Later that day at
7 p.m. she will discuss "After the Thrill of Victory..." Where: Great Hall, TUC.
Wednesday, May 17: noon. Emmy Gay, an African American and award-
winning comedienne, will discuss "Nappy Hair: A Celebration of Diversity." Where:
President's Dining Room, TUC. The program is part of the Food 4 Thought series. She
will also present "Body Talk" at 6:30 p.m. in the President's Dining Room,
TUC.
Thursday, May 18: 6 p.m. A panel of women of color will discuss how
they are viewed within their culture and throughout society in terms of skin, hair and
body image at a discussion sponsored by Shades of You: A Society for Women of Color.
