Cincinnati -- The UC Division of Public Safety debuted a new information service called"Bug Me" today. A brightly painted Volkswagen Beetle served as an information station for new students and visitors to UC's main campus. The "Bug Me" bug will be parked outside the Engineering Research Center near the main UC Bookstore with a crime prevention officer and dispatcher to answer questions during the first week of classes. Student workers are also be on hand to give out maps and directions from 7 am. to about 2 p.m. Crime Prevention officers Peggy Rose, Gary Oeters, and David Henson are the primary UC police officers assigned to the "Bug Me" service. However, Assistant police chief Robert Rohrbach said the car will be used in many other ways as well. "It's an information vehicle," said Rohrbach. "It's like driving a billboard. It attracts people, and it invites questions. It also makes our officers more approachable."
Rohrbach said the idea came from Vice President for Student Affairs and Human Resources Mitchel Livingston who was looking for a novel way to get information on crime prevention, fire safety, and other Public Safety services out to the campus community. Not surprisingly, the most common requests today were "Where's my class?" and "What building is that?" If you don't catch the bug this week, look for "Bug Me" at Homecoming, the Oct. 11th Health Fair, and at other major events on campus. |
