UC students won't have very far to go when they're looking for a fun way to kick off the weekend this year. In fact, they won't need a car at all -- a plus during these times of high gas prices -- when they choose UC's Friday Night Live (FNL) programs for free entertainment that's alcohol-free.

FNL kicks off its second year on campus this fall, with an ice cream social on Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. in the residence halls.

Friday Night Live Over the last academic year, FNL sponsored campus events such as the national Spitfire Tour, which brought the Indigo Girls and other human rights and environmental activists to campus.

On other Fridays, students tried swing dancing and country line dancing under the guidance of trained instructors, and a talent competition sponsored by student organizations CWEST and Metro packed the house at the Great Hall.

FNL is an initiative created by the UC Wellness Center and funded by departments and organizations campus wide to provide a fun party environment that is substance free.

"These are fun, exciting activities that do not revolve around alcohol," says Wellness Center program manager Kirsten Lupinski.

"As the word about Friday Night Live traveled around campus last year, we saw an increase in participation and by spring quarter, half of the events were sponsored by a student organization or student group. We had hundreds of people come to the last event, a cookout that was held on the final day of classes."
