| Just Community Presents Awards
Date: May 19, 2000 By: Eric Lose Phone: (513) 556-1805 Archive: Campus News UC Just Community Awards for 1999-2000 have recognized the following individuals and programs. Students Tiffany Bond and Glenn Walker were recognized for their efforts in rescuing a young boy from an attacker near campus a few months ago. The two were walking to an 8 a.m. class when they spotted the emergency and took action. Bond is in her third year of biology and Walker is a second-year University College student. Les Vuylsteke received the Just Community faculty award for his work as a mentor and adviser during the last two years. He is credited with restoring credibility and professionalism to student government. The award for outstanding administrator went to Judith Trent, associate vice president of Research and Advanced Studies. Trent was recognized for her work as director of the Albert C. Yates Fellows and Scholars Program. The Yates program provides financial assistance and mentoring for under-represented groups. The Urban Morgan Institute for Human Rights earned the departmental award. This year is the 20th anniversary for the institute, which is devoted to education, promotion and protection of international human rights. The Women and Racism program, staffed by Robin Arnsperger and Kimberly McGinnis-Hemphill, won the award for best student organization. Arnsperger and McGinnis-Hemphill sponsored a series of programs focusing on the responsibilities and challenges women confront to battle racism in society and on campus. The two women spearheaded many events, including the "Let's Talk About It" series that focused on privilege and oppression relative to race. |
