College is about hitting the books -- and in today's techno-driven world -- electronic research tools, the Internet and World Wide Web. If your professor tells you to go to the library, you might need to ask: Which one?

The University of Cincinnati operates a network of libraries that maintain more than 2.5 million volumes and 21,700 current serial subscriptions. UC's libraries also offer access to a rapidly expanding number of electronic resources.

The Ohio Library and Information Network (OhioLINK), of which UC is a founding member, recently received the Academic Excellence and Cost Management National Award, an honor from the American Council on Education and the USA Group Foundation. OhioLINK provides Internet access to 76 Ohio university and college libraries, as well as the state library of Ohio. OhioLINK was one of six programs selected for recognition from more than 120 entries nationwide. The following guide should help you find exactly what you need:

Archives and Rare Books <

Collections include medieval manuscripts, incunabula, modern printed works, photographs and electronic media. Notable collections include: German Americana Collection, Urban Studies Collection and the records management program for the university. The UC Digital Press is located in Archives and Rare Books.

John Miller Burnam Classics Library

One of the largest classical studies collections in the world, it is the largest self-contained classical studies library in the United States. Collections consist of 150,000 volumes including 35,000 which make up the Modern Greek Collection.

Chemistry/Biology Library

Collection supports teaching and instruction for the chemistry and biology departments. It includes 89,000 books and bound periodicals and over 400 journal subscriptions.

College-Conservatory of Music Library

The library houses 130,000 volumes and an extensive collection of audio-visual resources. Special collections include the Everett Helm Collection of early to mid-19th century imprints of piano music, the Walter Aiken Collection of 19th century American school and college song books and the Wurlitzer Collection of 19th century imprints of chamber music.

Curriculum Resources Center

The Curriculum Resources Center (CRC) provides resources for teaching activities in grades pre-school through 12 and primarily serves faculty and students of the College of Education. The CRC houses teacher handbooks and curriculum guides, children's and young adult books, teaching activities and audiovisual media. It is composed of four laboratories: Resource Materials Lab, Video Lab, Media Production Lab and Computer Lab. CRC also is home to the NASA Regional Educators Resource Center, one of three such centers in the state of Ohio.

Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning Library

This library serves the diverse needs of the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning, as well as the local arts community. The facility houses an assorted collection of books, journals, CD-ROMs, archival resources, electronic resources, Internet resources and an extensive collection of over 230,000 slides.

Engineering Library

The collection consists of over 65,000 volumes and 700 current journal titles, and supports research and instruction for the 12 degree programs in the College of Engineering. The Engineering Library is normally housed in Room 880, but will operate from Room 838 for the next year while the building is under renovation. Access to resources will be maintained but construction may occasionally disrupt access.

Geology/Physics Library

The library houses the Isay Balinkin Collection of Color and Light and the Willis G. Meyer Map Collection, with more than 125,000 maps. The collections provide instruction and research in geology and physics and include 97,000 books and more than 498 journal subscriptions.

Walter C. Langsam Library

The main library houses the university's collections in the social sciences and humanities. Administrative functions of the University Libraries are centralized in Langsam Library, including: Interlibrary loan, government documents, training and educational services, multimedia services and administrative offices. Other departments include circulation/reserves, periodical services and reference and research services. Langsam also houses the Elliston Poetry Collection, the A.B. Dolly and Ralph Cohen Enrichment Room and the Ben Bernstein Collection of pre-Columbian Art. The library presently is undergoing an extensive rewiring upgrade and renovation for state-of-the-art technology. Updates can be found at the library web site.

Mathematics Library

The collection consists of 45,000 volumes and 325 journal subscriptions, supporting research and instruction in the Department of Mathematics.

Robert S. Marx Law Library

Ranking among the top academic law libraries in the nation, it is home to the Urban Morgan Human Rights Collection, which includes materials from international organizations such as Amnesty International and the United Nations. The library is also available to the university community and the legal community for the purpose of conducting legal research.

Timothy C. Day Technical Library Location: 2220 Victory Parkway, College of Applied Science

Its collection supports instructional programs in applied sciences. The Day Library has particular collection strengths in its computer applications collection and a strong emphasis on undergraduate resources.

East Campus

Cincinnati Medical Heritage Center Location: First floor, Wherry Hall

The library supports the learning, research and patient care activities of the Medical Center with an emphasis on the history of medicine in Greater Cincinnati; also home to archives of Albert B. Sabin, developer of the oral polio vaccine.

Health Sciences Library

The home library to the colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences supports the learning, research and patient care activities of the students, staff and faculty of the Medical Center. Computer training and Internet access are also provided.

Nursing Library

The library offers one of the largest collections of books and periodicals on nursing in the region, with 10,000 books and more than 350 journal subscriptions. It is also home to the Phoebe Kandel Historical Collection.
