The Irish Times Norma Jenckes, English, wrote a column examining the current trend of depicting violence onstage in live theater. United Press International Edward Holland, ophthalmology, was quoted on his work related to studies that show that lab-cell transplants helped restore eyesight for people with severe eye problems. Charlotte (N.C.) News and Observer James Schiff, English, wrote a review for the paper, Pastoralia,on a new collection of short stories by author George Saunders. Nashville Tennessean Mary Anne Pitman, education, was quoted about home schooling. Albuquerque (N.M.) Tribune Lawrence Travis, criminal justice, was quoted in a pair of articles that examined recent fatal police shootings in Albuquerque. Dayton Daily News Steve Bennett, political science, was quoted about potential vice-presidential choices for the presidential campaigns. Alumni making news Kamal Gunsagar, who earned his master's degree in electrical engineering from UC, has been named as CEO of Lara Networks. Lara Networks is the industry leader in high performance Network Application Processors for the Internet infrastructure market. Eugene Cilento, who earned both his master's and doctoral degrees in chemical engineering from UC, has been named interim dean for the College of Engineering and Mineral Resources at West Virginia University. Cilento is a professor of chemical engineering and former head of the department. UC graduate Philip Shaw has been named to the newly created position of senior vice president, marketing, worldwide, for Disney Consumer Products. Shaw had been general manager of Nike's equipment division. Former UC golfer Kim Kincer is the women's golf coach at Methodist College in Fayetteville, N.C.
