OHIO BOARD OF REGENTS AWARDS GRANTS TO THREE
UC DISTANCE LEARNING INITIATIVES

Cincinnati -- The Ohio Board of Regents has approved a total of more than $1 million in awards, the highest amount in the most recent round of funds from the state's technology initiatives program, to help finance three distance learning projects involving the University of Cincinnati. The regents approved grant proposals from the College of Education, College of Evening and Continuing Education, and UC Medical Center.

Here is a brief overview of the UC projects:

  • Southwest Ohio Urban Network (SOUN) Awarded a $455,792 grant. This collaborative is working to create a distance learning hub at UC, which will provide videoconferencing and online content. Carman Wakefield, coordinator of distance learning and field-based courses, College of Education, says the network will bring medical and health resources to schools and will provide valuable resources and professional development for area math and science teachers. The partnership includes UC's College of Education, University Libraries, McMicken College of Arts and Sciences, University College, Raymond Walters College, Clermont College, UC Office of Information Technologies (UCit), Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, Cincinnati Public Schools, Dayton Public Schools, Hamilton City Schools, Middletown/Monroe City Schools, Hamilton, Warren and Clermont County Educational Service Centers, WCET-TV, Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens, SchoolNet, NetWellness and the Southwest Ohio Regional Professional Development (SWORD) Learning Network.

  • UC Medical Center Awarded a $405,792 grant for the proposal, "A Distributive Learning Model for Teaching Pharmacy and Therapeutics." Students around Ohio will have more flexibility in obtaining a PharmD degree, as the initiative provides streaming video of courses on the Web. Bill Fant, assistant dean for clinical and external affairs, College of Pharmacy, says the technology will help students fit classes around their work schedules and will allow them to better review their courses. This partnership includes the Ohio State University College of Pharmacy, University of Toledo College of Pharmacy, Ohio Northern College of Pharmacy and the Procter & Gamble Company.

  • College of Evening and Continuing Education A $164,500 grant was awarded to a proposal to expand opportunities for students interested in UC's addiction studies program through videoconferencing. UC's addiction studies program is the only one of its kind in Ohio, and one of a few in the country to offer an undergraduate degree in the field of understanding, treating and preventing addictions. The grant facilitates the expansion of the distance learning program to Central Ohio Technical College and Lima Technical College. UC has also linked with Columbus State College and Terra Community College in Fremont, Ohio, to provide the baccalaureate degree via distance learning.
  • The Ohio Board of Regents is an 11-member group that advises the governor and state lawmakers on issues pertaining to higher education. As part of its duties, the board oversees additional state money for public universities and colleges.
