Cincinnati -- Ohio's brightest high school sophomores and juniors will be converging on UC's campus in the weeks ahead as they participate in the Summer Honors Institutes for Gifted Students. The institutes challenge students who excel academically, providing experiences they would not encounter in their own high school classroom. The first week of the institutes begins June 18.

Enrollment is competitive. Only 100 students are accepted. Students must submit transcripts in addition to an essay and letter of recommendation from a teacher or counselor. Students can choose from three week long programs of study. During that time, they live on campus.

Here are the topics they'll explore:

  • June 18-23 Psychology Today
Students will learn that the study of psychology is a science, a social science and even an art as they explore brain functions, memory, personality, dreaming and gender stereotypes. Students will conduct their own study of the genders as they take a field trip to the Cincinnati Zoo at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 21. This institute will be led by UC psychology faculty Daniel Langmeyer and Paula Shear.

  • June 25-30 The Practice and Ethics of Medicine
Students will research actual case studies as they explore how the tough ethical decisions are made in medicine. How much should a patient be told about his or her condition? What are doctors saying about the right to die controversy? As part of their study, students will take a trip to the Hoxworth Center for a presentation of transplant research. Sessions will be conducted by Colin Macpherson, MD, professor emeritus, College of Allied Health Sciences, and Charles Seibert, assistant professor of humanities and social sciences, University College.

  • July 9-14 Law, Language and Society
As students explore the legal system and how it works, they'll take a tour of a real courtroom and end the week with a mock trial in which students portray the prosecutors, defense attorneys, defendants and witnesses. A local judge will preside over the mock trial that begins at 1:30 p.m. July 14 in the courtroom of UC's College of Law. Sessions will be held by northern Kentucky attorney Michael Delaney and Cynthia Ris, a UC doctoral student in the Department of English.
