Turner Scholars Program is looking for volunteers who are willing to get a little exercise in order to make a difference in the lives of academically talented students of color. The program will benefit from a walk-a-thon scheduled for Saturday, April 8, beginning at the UC African American Cultural and Research Center (AACRC). The Inaugural Walk for Turner will feature a five-mile course through UC and surrounding areas that takes approximately 90 minutes to one hour and three-quarters. Both pledges and walkers are needed to meet the goal of raising $20,000 to sponsor the education of one Darwin T. Turner Scholar for four years. Check-in will begin at 7 a.m., with warm-up exercises to follow at 7:30 a.m. Opening ceremonies will launch the walk-a-thon at 8 a.m. A closing raffle of prizes will take place at 10 a.m. The Darwin T. Turner Scholars Program began at UC in 1976 under the name "Minority Scholars Program." In 1991, it was renamed to honor the youngest person to ever graduate from the university, an African American named Darwin Turner, who graduated at age 16 in 1947. Registration, due by March 27, is $25 per walker.
