Women's Film Festival Lineup Announced

The UC Center for Women's Studies sixth annual Women's Film Festival will feature documentaries and films on subjects such as the Barbie doll, a small-town physician who performed abortions before they were legalized, an Appalachian African American woman and activist, and gender gaps in African schools.

Twelve films will be shown from Feb. 25-March 4, all in Room 427, Engineering Research Center. Viewings begin at 7 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

Friday, Feb. 25
Theme: Girlhood, Youth Culture and Education. Films: El Corrido de Ceclia Rios, about Latino youth coping with violence, grief and healing; 24 Girls, fleeting glimpses of girls on the threshold of maturity and loss of innocence; These Girls are Missing: The Gender Gap in Africa's Schools, explores the lack of education opportunities for African girls.

Saturday, Feb. 26
Theme: U.S. Pop Culture. Films: Barbie Nation: Unauthorized Tour tells stories of Barbie featuring men, women and children; Shorts Jollie and A New Year, both created by a young lesbian videographer; Honey Moccasin, set on the Grand Pine Reservation, questions the conventions of ethnic and sexual identities.

Friday, March 3Theme: Women's Work, Women's Rights: Global Issues. Films: Who's Counting: Marilyn Waring on Sex Lies and Global Economics gives feminist economist and former member of the New Zealand Parliament's views on economic policy; A Woman's Place explores the connections between three women in the United States, South Africa and India using law as a tool for social change.

Saturday, March 4
Theme: Political Subjects and Activism. Films: Some Ground to Stand On tells the life story of a working class lesbian activist; Dear Dr. Spencer: Abortion in a Small Town looks at Robert Douglas Spencer, a small town doctor who performed abortions before it was legal; Evelyn Williams, a portrait of an African American Appalachian and activist.
