From the AVP
Background
Periodically, the FBI undertakes to survey the landscape of computer crime across the country. To compile a detailed understanding of the kinds of issues that we are currently seeing and the impact of those issues. The 2005 FBI Computer Crime Survey is available by clicking on the image to the right. One of the most revealing questions in the survey was Question 13:
What approximate dollar cost would you assign to the following types of incidents over the past 12 months?
Answers given to these questions lead experts to conservatively estimate that there were:
- 2.8 million organizations that experienced at least one incident with an average loss of $24,000
- This totals $67.2 billion per year in losses
- Average of $7.6 million per hour
