How To...  Setup spam filters at UC

Spam is a major issue at every large organization. UC is no exception. The solution that UC has in place protects us all from the majority of spam message, but to be most effective, you need to do something on your side as well.

UC has a spam filter in place that scans all incoming email messages and tags each with a score (from 0-300) that indicates how likely the message is to be spam. However, only items that have a score of 300 are automatically removed before getting to your email inbox. Items that score in an intermediate range (between 50-299) are *most likely* spam, but there is a chance they are legitimate and so these are not removed. UC does not want to risk removing an item that may be legitimate and is critical to you.

The good news is that there is something you can do! Remember, each message is tagged by our spam filter. You can set up your own filter in you local email client that will look for that tag and will send the "probably spam, but maybe not" messages to a junkmail folder. It only takes 3-5 minutes to set this up and, once you do, you should notice an immediate impact in the amount of spam you see!

One thing to keep in mind though. You should go through your junkmail folder periodically, move any legitimate messages to you inbox and then clean it out. Otherwise your mailbox will become full of junk...

To set up your filter, just pick your browser below. If your browser is not listed, try the one below that is closest so you understand what needs to be done, and then refer to the help file of your email client for details on how to set up the filter. Note that the instructions below are tweaked for UC personnel. The specific filter shown will not work outside of UC. However these instructions still show the general approach to setting up your own private filters.
