How to setup a spam filter for Outlook Web Access

Note: These instructions are tweaked for UC. The specific filter shown will not work outside of UC. However these instructions still show the general approach to setting up your own private filters using this email client.

  1. Go to Outlook Web Access (OWA)
  2. Sign in to OWA
  3. Click the "Options" item near the upper right corner
  4. Click the "Rules" category on the left side
  5. Click the "New Rule" pull-down
  6. Click "Create a new rule for arriving messages" (bottom item)
  7. A rule window (or tab in Internet Explorer 7) will be shown
  8. Click the "If the message includes specific words..." pull-down on the right pane
  9. Click the check box for "In the message header"
  10. Click "specific words" on the left pane
  11. Where the frame says "Type words or phrases here.", type "X-Junkmail: UCE" exactly, without the quotes. 
  12. Click Add
  13. Click OK
  14. Under "Do the following" on the right, click the "Move, copy, or delete..." pull-down
  15. Mark the check box for "Move to the specified folder"
  16. Click "Specified" on the bottom line on the left pane
  17. Select "Junk E-mail" and click OK
  18. Give the rule a meaningful name at the bottom (such as "Spam Filter") and click Save in the bottom right corner to close the rule window or tab.
