PGP Whole Disk Encryption

This page contains important information. Please read it completely before attempting to install or use PGP.

PGP is an integrated encryption software that seamlessly provides encryption protection with virtually no performance impact to your computer. The software is available for download below.

Requirements:

To use PGP Whole Disk Encryption (WDE), you must

  • be UC faculty or staff
  • have administrator-level access to the computer on which you are installing the software

Downloads:

Log on to GETit at https://webapps.uc.edu/ucit/getit/ to request PGP for your computer.

*Affiliates can also request PGP through GETit

Installation process:

Before downloading, please review all these steps and perform each one before going on to the next.

  1. BACKUP YOUR DATA PRIOR TO INSTALLATION OF PGP
As with any new software, upgrade or patches there is always a possibility, remote as it may be, that a user could suffer from data loss or system failure.
  2. Please print the User Guide and have it available before you install the software.
  3. Download (save) the appropriate installation package below to your computer and begin installation (run the file you just saved to your computer).
  4. During installation, you will be asked to select a password (or pass phrase). We strongly recommend that you choose to use the same password as you use to log on to your computer so you will only have to sign in once when booting up your system. If you do not, you will have to provide two passwords, one for decryption and another to log into your computer.
  5. You will be required to reboot.
  6. After reboot, use your UC e-mail user name and password when prompted.
  7. Once your computer finishes booting up, open PGP Desktop, select Full Disk, then “Encrypt.”
This one-time process can take up to several hours. During the initial encryption, you may experience a small performance impact which will go away once the process is complete.

IMPORTANT: Every time your computer starts up after your drive is encrypted, the monitor will display a BLANK screen. Press any key to reach the password prompt. Log in with your email password.

In the event you forget your password, call UCIT Help Desk at 556-HELP (4357) for assistance.

Notes:

  • This software will function only if you are UC faculty or staff
  • Access to these links is available only from inside of UC networks. If you are UC faculty or staff attempting to access these links from outside of UC campus, you will need to connect via VPN

ATTENTION: Mac users with Bootcamp

MAC USERS: If you are using Bootcamp you must Boot to the OS where you want to install PGP (i.e. Windows 7) and then install the package for that operating system (in this example, windows). You must encrypt individual partitions when using Bootcamp. You cannot encrypt the entire hard drive.
