Cartagena, Colombia Education and Culture Program

Two study abroad courses will be offered in Summer 2009 in Cartagena, a UNESCO World Heritage site that attracts over 1.5 million tourists a year. A Walled City located on the Caribbean coast, Cartagena was one of the three main “treasure” ports during the Spanish colonial era and is today a major center of Afro-Caribbean culture. You will observe and participate in PK-12 or University-level classes; meet Colombian teachers, students, and their families; and learn about the social, political, historical, and cultural factors affecting education in this developing nation. You will also have the opportunity to visit some of the most important historical and cultural sites in the region, including the Palace of the Inquisition, Cartagena Gold Museum, Cathedral of San Pedro Claver, Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas, and the Rosary Islands. Ample beach time will also be scheduled.
Participants may register for Global Education Abroad (18-CI-TBA, 3 credits) or Practicum in Adult/International Education (18-LTCY-731, 1-3 credits). Both courses require participation in pre-departure and follow-up sessions, some of which will be held online. As the major assignment for the courses, you will design and carry out a practice-based project related to working with immigrant or international students based on what you learn in the study abroad experience.
Actual time in Cartagena will be June 27 to July 12. Maximum cost of the trip excluding airfare and tuition will be $1,500 for the two-week stay (depending upon students’ choice of local housing) and will include all educational, historical, and cultural activities, lodging, and many meals. Students may choose to extend their stay at an additional cost.
Your commitment to participating in this study abroad tour must be made by May 18, 2009 and must be accompanied by an initial payment of $500. No refund of this payment will be made if you withdraw from the tour. The remaining balance, which will depend upon your choice of lodging, will be due on June 8. You may purchase your airline ticket at any time; consult with Dr. Benedetti regarding airline options and schedules. Registration for this study abroad tour will be limited to 14 students.
For additional information, please contact Dr. Mary Benedetti at mary.benedetti@uc.edu.
