The 2009 Italian Summer Studio is an intensive two-week charrette program scheduled for the 1st-14th of September and will be conducted on the island of Sardinia, Italy.

STUDIO STRUCTURE

The studio will be divided into three parts

1. Pre-charrette activity

This is an orientation to the island of Sardinia, and its northwestern urban centers. Concepts of urbanism and urban design will be discussed in lectures and site visits.

2. Charrette Studio (Scuola Estiva Interationale 09)

The SEI 09 is an intensive ten day charrette program SEI is an annual summer school program provided by the Facolta that is open to any students (primarily Italian) that are currently enrolled at other Universities and are seeking undergraduate and graduate degrees in engineering, architecture, and planning. Each year the work of SEI is focused on significant urban and environmental issues that affect Sardinian and European municipalities and the work of the studio is provided to local policy makers for their planning and development efforts.

3. Post-Studio independent activity

Student will create two reports. Students will document their individual studio team project and process in a brief report. During the free time after the studio and before the end of the quarter students will conduct and document an analytical study of a subject urban context outside of Sardinia using theories and techniques developed during SEI 09.

STUDIO ORGANIZATION

Approximately 60 students and faculty will participate in SEI 09. Students work in teams with a Professor and a Tutor to produce design schemes for the projects, which will be presented, to local policy makers. Each day is a 10 to 12 hour plus intense team engagement as a studio experience with a comprehensive design proposal presented for comment and critique. Relevant theory and history lectures will be provided throughout the course of the studio. Field trips with the design teams and separately by the American students will occur. DAAP students would be dispersed into the various teams of Italian students and faculty.

The school will be located at the costal resort of Alghero in the northwestern part of the island of Sardinia. All studio participants will be housed in Hotel Margherita at this location and will conduct studio work at the Facolta di Architettura di Alghero studio rooms.
