2011 Gilman Scholarship Recipients
Six University of Cincinnati students will study abroad during Fall 2011 with the help of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. They were among the 960 recipients nationwide selected through a competition with over 2,500 applications. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the Gilman Scholarship Program provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. Five students will spend a semester studying abroad:
- Nathaniel Hill – Korea University, Seoul, South Korea
- Omolara McCloud – American University of Dubai, United Arab Emirates
- William McIlwain – SIT Study Abroad in Tunisia
- Mary Kay Meier – Universities Study Abroad Consortium (USAC), Viterbo, Italy
- Nicholas Seay – American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS), St. Petersburg, Russia
One student will spend the entire academic year studying abroad:
Deepika Joshi – Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona, Spain
The goal of the Gilman Scholarship Program is the diversification of study abroad, both in the kinds of students who study abroad and the destinations they choose. The program seeks to support undergraduates who might not otherwise participate in a study abroad program due to financial constraints. Awards range up to $5,000 or up to $8,000 if the program involves study of a critical language Critical languages supported by the Gilman Program include:
- Arabic (all dialects)
- Chinese (all dialects)
- Turkic (Azerbaijani, Kazakh, Kyrgz, Turkish, Turkmen, Uzbek)
- Persian (Farsi, Dari, Kurdish, Pashto, Tajiki)
- Indic (Hindi, Urdu, Nepali, Sinhala, Bengali, Punjabi, Marathi, Gujarati, Sindhi)
- Korean
- Russian
- Swahili
