Health Insurance Requirement for J-1 Scholars

All J-1 Exchange Visitors (and dependents) are required to have health insurance that meets Department of State Requirements. Such requirements include: medical benefits of at least $50,000 per accident or illness; repatriation of remains in the amount of $7,500; medical evacuation to the home country in the amount of $10,000; and a deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness.

The insurance policy must be underwritten by an insurance corporation having an A.M. Best rating of 'A' or above, an Insurance Solvency International, Ltd. (ISI) rating of 'A-1' or above, a Standard & Poor’s Claims-paying ability rating of 'A-' or above, a Weiss Research, Inc. rating of B+.  Insurance coverage backed by the full faith and credit of the government of the exchange visitor’s home country shall be deemed to meet this requirement.

If your appointment is not covered by University of Cincinnati medical benefits, or the student health insurance plan, you will be required to provide UC International Services with proof of insurance that meets the requirements upon arrival. Failure to produce such proof of insurance will result in the termination of your J-1 Exchange Visitor Program.

If needed, you can obtain valid insurance policy applications from UC International Services or one of the following companies via the internet:
