Cassette Tapes

  1. Well Said : Advanced English Pronunciation by Linda Grand, Boston, MA: Heinle & Heinle 1993. 4 cassette tapes.
    Designed to enhance speech intelligibility by focusing on common problems of advanced learners, such as stress, intonation, and rhythm
    The text organization is based on aspects of pronunciation that can be the primary obstacles to intelligibility. Communicative activities reinforce the pronunciation point under study and relate to speaking tasks that naturally occur in academic, home, or work settings.
    The exercises move from a focus on form to a focus on meaning to bridge the gap from structural readings to spontaneous communication. 

  2. All Clear: Idioms in Context, by Helen Kalkstein Fragiadakis, Boston, MA: Heinle & Heinle, 1993. 3 cassette tapes.
    A program for intermediate to advanced levels stressing an inductive approach to communicating effectively in English by recognizing and producing high-frequency American idioms. It features conversational situations which reflect social customs that can serve as a basis for class discussion with a cross-cultural focus. Idiomatic usage is supplemented with grammatical information and notes about cultural use, register, and pronunciation. The cassette recordings provide examples of natural conversations that cover a wide range of speech acts and emotions.

     
  3. Functions of American English--Communicative Activities for the Classroom, by Leo Jones & C. Baeyer , New York, NY: Cambridge University Press, 1991. 1 cassette tape.
    The text is designed for high intermediate and advanced learners who feel confident about using English language in real life situations. It is organized in units which are divided into several sections such as conversation, presentations, exercises, communication activities, and written work.
     
  4. Against All Odds--Speaking Naturally with Idioms, by Marie Hutchison Eichler, Boston, MA: Heinle & Heinle, 1991, 2 cassette tapes.
    An idioms text and audio cassette program designed to help students develop their abilities to speak and understand more natural-sounding English. Idioms are presented in a communicative context along with numerous interactive activities so that students learn to communicate authentically.
    To ensure maximum comprehension, each chapter is limited to 15-17 idioms, which are grouped semantically and spiraled throughout the text.

  5. Grammar Through Stories, by Pricilla Karaant, New York, NY: St. Martin's Press, 1994, 1 cassette tape.
    An textbook for intermediate to advanced students who need to improve grammatical accuracy and fluency in English. It provides stories for students to listen to, then retell and react to them. The text comes with an audio cassette that allows students to work on their own.

  6. Sound Advice--A Basis for Listening, by Stacy A. Hagen, Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice-Hall, 1988, 3 cassette tapes.
    Designed to prepare intermediate and advanced ESL students for understanding rapid, relaxed English. It presents a skills approach to discrete-point listening. Through systematic practice with such phenomena as linking, assimilation, and reduced speech, the book describes what native speakers are doing when sounds are put together, and why sounds are combined as they are. Sound Advice includes detailed listening practice.

  7. Learn to Listen, Listen to Learn--an Advanced ESL/EFL Lecture Comprehension and Note-taking Textbook, By Roni S. Lebauer, Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice-Hall Press, 1988, 5 cassette tapes.
    Designed to help advanced ESL students prepare for the demands of academic lecture comprehension and note-taking. Lecture outlines, lecture transcripts and exercise are available.

  8. Pronouncing American English--Sounds, Stress, and Intonation, by Gertrude F. Orion, Boston, MA.: Heinle & Heinle Publishers, 1988 16 cassette tapes.
    This book provides intermediate students with essential skills for clear speech and appropriate intonation. In combination with the accompanying cassette tapes, it emphasizes oral practice, this unique approach allows students to focus on stretches of speech rather than individual sounds.

  9. Getting the Picture, by Nancy Herzfeld-Pipkin, Boston, MA: Heinle & Heinle Publishers, 1992 3 cassette tapes.

    ESL students are introduced to the idioms through conversations, public announcements and notices, short narratives, telephone messages, broadcasts, business conversations.

  10. Academic Mini-Lectures, by Connie Roguski, Heinle & Heinle Publishers, 1990, 1 cassette tape.
    A text for listening and note-taking practice, it introduces intermediate to advanced students to the types of topics they will read about and the kinds of lectures they will hear in an American university classroom. The text consists of 15 mini-lectures, the variety of topics presented in this text will offer students the opportunity to listen to and discuss
    information from many fields.
