Günter Grass celebrated his 80th birthday on 16 October 2007. He is the only living German winner of the Literaturnobelpreises. He received it for its major work „the Blechtrommel--the Tin Drum “. The film highlights the first large creative period up to developing "the Blechtrommel." At the center are also his childhood and youth years, viewed anew with the recent confession he was drafted into Nazi Germany's notorious Waffen SS elite force during World War II.
