Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI)

Learning and Study Strategies Inventory - LASSI:  Students who have problems with studying can take the web version of the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) .  The LASSI is a 10-scale, 80-item assessment designed to gather information about learning, study practices as it relates to 10 areas: attitude, anxiety, concentration, information processing, motivation, selecting main ideas, self-testing, study aids, time management and test taking strategies.

We will work with you one-on-one to develop an intervention strategy tailored to your  specific needs.  It is our hope, that this action will result not only in students who are more readily prepared for their college experience, but to provide you with the necessary skills to graduate from college and be a lifelong learner.  The Learning Assistance Center provides appointment based academic coaching Monday - Friday.  from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  Look at our  Two Case Studies, these students dramatically increased their LASSI scores significantly after one-on-one academic coaching sessions!  The following case studies involve two young ladies.  Both graduated from Ohio schools with a 3.0 high school GPA in classes with fewer than 170 students. The first student is in the Honors Program and the second is a student from Arts & Sciences.
he LASSI is a 10-scale, 80 item assessment of students’ awareness about the use of learning and study strategies related to skill, will and self-regulation components of strategic learning. This assessment can be taken on-line and takes about 15-20 minutes to complete. The focus is on both covert and overt thoughts, behaviors, attitudes and beliefs that relate to successful learning and that can be altered through educational interventions. Research has repeatedly demonstrated that these factors contribute significantly to success in college and that they can be learned or enhanced through educational interventions such as learning and study skills courses.

The LASSI provides standardized scores (percentile score equivalents) and national norms for ten different scales (there is no total score since this is a diagnostic measure). The LASSI is both diagnostic and prescriptive. It provides students with a diagnosis of their strengths and weaknesses, compared to other college students, in the areas covered by the 10 scales and is prescriptive in that it provides feedback about areas where students may be weak and need to improve their knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and skills.

The Learning Assistance Center will work with students one-on-one to develop an intervention strategy tailored to their specific needs. It is our hope, that this action will result not only in students who are more readily prepared for their college experience, but to provide them with the necessary skills to graduate from college and be life long learners.

The LASSI provides the student and the institution a comprehensive analysis of student’s attitudes, skills and beliefs related to learning in 3 domains of learning:
*Skill Component: (information processing, selecting main ideas, test strategies)
*Will Component: (attitude, motivation, and anxiety) and
*Self-Regulation Component: (concentration, time management, self-testing, and study aids)

The LASSI can be used as:

  • A basis for improving all student's learning and study strategies;
  • A diagnostic measure to help identify areas in which students could benefit most from educational interventions;
  • A counseling tool for college orientation programs, developmental education programs, learning assistance programs, and learning centers;
  • A pre-post achievement measure for students participating in programs or courses focusing on learning strategies and study skills;
  • An evaluation tool to assess the degree of success of intervention programs or courses.

The LASSI is easily administered in 30 minutes and is self-scored. Each LASSI packet includes the instrument and score interpretation information.

LASSI ONLINE MODULES
In addition, the publishers of LASSI have developed a series of learning modules linked to the various components of LASSI. These modules are web-based, self-directed exercises designed to assist students in learning how to improve their weak areas to become more effective learners. Students may purchase the LASSI Online Modules at H & H Publishing, Company.
