Thomas Cobbe Collection
of
Composer Portraits
The Thomas Cobbe Collection of Composer Portraits was generously
donated to the University of Cincinnati's Gorno Memorial Music
Library in 1993 by the artist, Thomas Cobbe. Dr. Cobbe made the
portraits for his colleagues at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio,
who used them as signature portraits for music programs. Source
material for the portraits was drawn mostly from the collections of
the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County as well as
from the publisher Theodore Presser. The Thomas Cobbe Collection
of Composer Portraits is free of copyright. The portraits may be
used by anyone without restriction.
Dr. Cobbe is a graduate of Hughes High School in Cincinnati, and
was graduated in 1940 and 1941 from the University of Cincinnati
with degrees in Botany. He earned his Ph.D. in Botany in 1953 from
the University of Michigan. His illustrations have been used in
scientific publications on plant physiology and toxic and poisonous
plants. Dr. Cobbe recently retired from a teaching career at Miami
University.
The Web version of the Cobbe Collection was conceived and executed
by Paul Cauthen and Mark Palkovic. The project would not have been
possible without the generous assistance of these individuals:
Office of Instructional Technology: Prof. Jeff Gordon, Brian
Hageman, Dave Solko
CCM Library: Matt Hébert (master scanner)
