UC s Greek Week Surpasses Fundraising Goal

An’80s-themed Greek Week at the University of Cincinnati was so successful in terms of fund-raising that UC’s Greek organizations will now be able to sponsor three children with life-threatening conditions in making their dreams come true.

Vicki Marsala Calonge, UC program coordinator for Fraternity and Sorority Life at UC, says UC’s Greek organizations raised $22,000 – $7,000 beyond their fundraising goal for the Make-A-Wish Foundation – to send two children to Disney World. As a result, the additional money will sponsor the wishes of a third Tristate child battling a life-threatening illness. Jessica King, a member of Chi Omega sorority and president of the UC Greek Week Executive Board, says 88 students representing Greek organizations donated blood for the Hoxworth Blood Center.

The news was announced at the April 24 Greek Awards Banquet in the Great Hall of Tangeman University Center (TUC), where the Greek Week Champion trophies were presented to Chi Omega sorority and Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.

Also at the banquet Pi Kappa Alpha, Zeta Phi Beta and Chi Omega took honors as chapter of the quarter. Overall premier chapter excellence awards were presented to Delta Delta Delta and Pi Kappa Alpha.

UC senior Dominic Berardi, a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, was honored with the Outstanding Greek Achievement Award, as was Carly Weiler of Chi Omega sorority.

Every year, UC’s Greek organizations contribute more than 20,000 hours to community service and philanthropies, according to Calonge.
