Video: Students Celebrate Another Record Success For Overnight Relay

The University of Cincinnati Relay For Life to benefit the American Cancer Society raised $116,000 to support the research, treatment and education to battle cancer, according to Lauren Kellum, income development coordinator for the American Cancer Society Southwest Region. The April 25-26 event on McMicken Commons exceeded UC’s goals to raise $115,000 and was $13,500 over the $102,500 total that UC volunteers raised during the 2007 Relay For Life at UC.

The volunteers and their tents covered McMicken Commons overnight on Friday. The UC event was themed around Walt Disney movies and students turned out in full costume. They also stood by at their tents with baked goods, grill-outs and other goodies to raise additional money for the Relay.

Co-chairs for UC’s Relay For Life were Florence Lucas, a UC sophomore and secondary education major, and Lisa Winton, a third-year biology/pre-med major from Cleveland, Ohio.

The Alpha Epsilon Pi “A Lions” took honors for the top fundraising team at the event, raising more than $3,900. The 2008 Relay For Life at UC had a record 139 teams and more than 1,400 participants.

Through Aug. 31, UC faculty, staff, students and members of the Cincinnati USA community can continue to support the fundraiser by contributing through the UC/Relay For Life Web site.
