CCM Announces 2009-10 Studio Series of Drama, Musical Theatre and Opera

The quality and production values of its shows makes it easy to forget sometimes that CCM is an educational institution.

UC ingot   “When people see the professional quality of our performances with full staging and tech support, they get so caught up in the productions they come to think of us more as a presenting organization and less as a school.  We are very pleased and proud of that, but we never forget that our reason for being is the student, not the production,” says University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) Dean Douglas Knehans.

The 2009–10 Studio Series of drama, musical theatre and opera productions brings the immersive training to light. In the small, intimate and versatile block box, the Cohen Family Studio Theater, the audience is close enough to see the students sweat, grimace, concentrate and bare their souls. Student designers help create the costumes and sets. Student make-up specialists have designed the hair and make-up and wigs if needed, to help bring each character to life. They create elaborate lighting designs and magical soundscapes. CCM students learn by doing.

“Students work just as hard producing the CCM Studio Series as they do Mainstage productions. They still have to memorize their lines, go to rehearsal and get into character,” Richard Hess, chair of the drama department offers as he shares his enthusiasm of what is in store for the upcoming school year.

The 2009–2010 Season Studio Season includes one dramatic work, one student produced festival of work, four operas and three musicals. Included in the season is TRANSMIGRATION, a festival of student-created new works, which returns for it’s second year. In one weekend, 58 actors will perform nine different shows in three different performance venues in the CCM complex. Musicals Redux also returns to present forgotten musicals in a new and inventive way.

Please see below for production and ticketing details. For additional information, call the CCM Box Office at 513-556-4183 or visit www.ccm.uc.edu.

Amanda Consol, director

Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda
Composed by Claudio Monteverdi
Libretto by Torquato Tasso

Idomeneo: Written when the composer was 24, Idomeneo was Mozart's first mature opera seria. The story of Idomeneo is told with a thrilling mix of florid vocal writing and eloquent orchestral episodes. Who is Idomeneo and why are the gods pursuing and punishing him? Why is Idomeneo, King of Crete and one of the greatest Greek military men in the Trojan War, prepared to sacrifice his own son to save himself? Sung in Italian with projected English translations.

Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda: This operatic conversation is written for three voices, based on a scene in Tasso's epic cycle of 1575. Monteverdi's work tells of Tancred, a Christian knight on a crusade to the Holy Land, who fights a masked infidel in single combat outside the gates of Jerusalem. When the defeated enemy is finally unmasked, Tancred discovers he has unwittingly killed the woman he loves, Clorinda, a Saracen warrior maiden. Sung in Italian with projected English translations.

Musicals Redux: Human Comedy
Music by Galt MacDermot
Book and lyrics by William Dumaresq
Based on a story by William Saroyan
Aubrey Berg, director

Briefly seen on Broadway in 1984, The Human Comedy is a coming-of-age tale about young Homer Macauley, a telegram messenger who is exposed to the sorrows and joys experienced by his family and the residents of his small California town during World War II. Through-composed, the musical is reminiscent of American folk-operas like Porgy and Bess and includes elements of 1940s sing, gospel, pop, folk and show tunes.

Similar to the “Lost Musicals” produced in London and New York’s “Encores” series, Musicals Redux revives a forgotten gem from the golden age of American musicals each year.

Performance Dates: May 13–15, 2010
