UC ingot   CCM, the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati, presents Fête Française, a festival of music showcasing the work of legendary French composers including Claude Debussy, Francis Poulenc and Maurice Ravel. Join us this fall as CCM ensembles explore the decadent harmonies and rich textures that make the music of France uniquely French.

The celebration kicks off on Wednesday, Oct. 14, with a performance of two of Ravel’s most exciting compositions—Concert pour le main gauche and Daphnis and Chloé, featuring the CCM Philharmonia led by music director and conductor Mark Gibson. Originally composed in 1929 for Austrian pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right arm in World War I, Ravel’s Concert pour le main gauche (Concerto for the Left Hand) has become infamous for the amazing feats of left-handed dexterity it requires to make one hand sound like two.

Orchestra concerts continue through early November and include performances of Berlioz’s Overture to Benvenuto Cellini, Bizet’s Symphony in C, Debussy’s Prelude à l’après-midi d’un faune, and Ravel’s Bolero, featuring the CCM Philharmonia, Concert Orchestra and Women’s Chorus. Matinées Musicales, a lunch series held Tuesdays at noon in the CCM Atrium, showcases additional student artists.

Festivities will conclude with a semi-staged performance of Poulenc’s hilariously absurd surrealist opera, Les Mamelles de Tirésias, by CCM Philharmonia and CCM Opera, conducted by Karl Shymanovitz with stage direction by Robin Guarino.
