UC ingot   The University of Cincinnati's Department of Geology (in the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences) was asked to host the ninth North American Paleontological Convention in the "Year of Darwin," based on the department's rock-solid reputation as well as the region's prominence in the history of paleontology itself. The conference, which takes place every four years, was held June 26 to 29, 2009, on the University of Cincinnati Uptown campus with field trips throughout the Tristate area.

The banner on Tangeman University Center brightly welcomed the scientists to the UC campus.
The NAPC brought 500 paleontologists, scientists and educators to UC's Uptown campus in June.

One of the many field trips offered to the 500 paleontologists and other scientists was to the Creation Museum in Northen Kentucky. While the scientists were observing the displays, the media were observing the scientists. One of those was Linda Vaccariello, executive editor of "Cincinnati Magazine." Her article, "And On the Sixth Day, God Created Paleontologists," appears in the November issue of the magazine, just in time for the sesquicentennial of the publication of Darwin's "On the Origin of Species." Mark Perzel of Cincinnati Public Radio's interviewed Linda Vaccariello for "Cincinnati Edition" on Nov. 2, 2009.

Beyond the Geology Department, the entire University of Cincinnati has been involved in a year-long celebration of the life and achievements of Charles Darwin, who was born Feb. 12, 1809 (the same day as Abraham Lincoln). Darwin's seminal work, "On the Origin of Species," (which went through many title changes over its various editions) was first published on Nov. 24, 1859. UC celebrates the sesquicentennial of that publication with a series of events that continues up through Nov. 24, 2009.
