Interim Dean James F. McDonough will retire (again) today but his legacy will live on at UC Clermont College with the renaming of the Educational Services Building in his and his wife Kathryn’s honor.
The idea for James and Kathryn McDonough Hall began with faculty member and Interim Business Division Chair Jeff Bauer and his idea to propose a resolution last spring. “When Jim retired the first time we wanted to recognize him for his service to the college. We planted a tree that kept dying and eventually put in a marble bench. Somehow that didn’t seem sufficient given all of his contributions to the college and community,” said Bauer.
"When we found out that Jim was coming back (in 2007) – we decided that we needed to do a better job of recognizing him and Kathryn the second time around," said Bauer.
Bauer and the Faculty Senate drafted a proposal and began the process in the spring. They knew this resolution would need to pass through several layers of approval and were unsure if it would prevail. "When the proposal came before the faculty at the meeting - I was floored - there was no discussion (which is highly unusual in this setting) and the resolution was approved unanimously. Everyone was on board," Bauer said.
The resolution passed through each approval phase and was eventually endorsed this past fall by UC’s Board of Trustees.
The faculty and staff wanted to do something substantial that would be fitting for the McDonough’s contributions to the college and the Clermont County community. “We believe we got it right this time,” said Bauer.
The McDonough Hall sign was presented to Jim and Kathryn at the college’s holiday gathering earlier this month. An official dedication ceremony will take place later in the spring.  “Words cannot express the affection we feel for the college and the appreciation for this unique and very special honor,” said Dean McDonough after being presented with the signage.
McDonough’s service to UC includes 44 years of service spanning five decades as a faculty member, administrator and dean. During his tenure as dean of UC Clermont College, McDonough served on the boards of many Clermont County organizations including the Clermont County Chamber of Commerce; Clermont County Senior Services; Clermont 20/20; Clermont Educational Opportunities and the United Way.  McDonough has been the recipient of numerous national awards for distinguished service and outstanding teaching. In 2008, he was honored with the Edward J. Parish Pacesetter Award by the Clermont County Chamber.
