UC Records Manager Earns International Certification

Janice Schulz, UC’s manager of the University Records Program, has risen to the “stringent eligibility requirements,” experience, education and competencies to achieve top certification in her field. Schulz, who lives in Blue Ash, is now one of only 12 people in Ohio to be included in the registry of the Institute of Certified Records Managers, an international certifying organization under the Association of Records Managers and Administrators (ARMA).

ARMA is an organization with members representing more than 30 countries.

Schulz has served as UC’s University Records Manager and Archives Specialist since 2006, as part of the function of the UC Archives and Rare Books Library. The University Records Management Program was established in 1979 in accordance with state and federal law to promote efficiency, protect the university by following federal and state guidelines, and preserve the history of the university in one central location.

To achieve certification, Schulz was required to document her professional work experience and education, pass a five-part exam, and complete two case-study essays. “The preparation really helped me in regard to my own professional development,” Schulz says. “I was able to pass all five sections of the exam on my first try, and the technology section typically has only a 30 percent pass rate for people who first take the exam.”

Janice Shulz, university records manager, receives a national certification as a records manager, placing UB in the fore front ofother colleges and universities.

In addition to her professional duties at UC, Schulz serves as secretary of the Ohio Electronics Records Committee, which is charged to draft policy for the creation, maintenance and long-term preservation of and access to records created by Ohio’s state government. She is also a member of the Society of Ohio Archivists.

Schulz is also a UC student, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in history from the McMicken College of Arts & Sciences (A&S).

For UC offices reviewing their records management, Schulz says January is a good time to check retention schedules and to make sure they’re up to date, as well as review how to improve programs. She’ll be offering records management workshops coming up in the spring.

Before Katie Trauth Taylor worked with international organizations like NASA, Boeing and Hershey, and before receiving accolades for her work in the generative AI space, she was in a much different industry – English and literature. Taylor earned her master's in English and Comparative Literature in UC’s College of Arts and Sciences. She completed her educational journey at Purdue University with a doctorate degree in rhetoric and composition. After working as a graduate assistant at Purdue and UC, she became a research professor at Miami University. It might seem from there that her career was set—perhaps a tenured professorship or a university administrative position. That might have been her path, but Taylor had her eyes set on different goals. So how did Taylor transition from literature and composition to tech entrepreneurship?
