'Par Avion' Exhibit by Kenneth Gibson featured in Park National Bank Art Gallery at UC Clermont College
Par Avion: An Exhibit of Photovella Postcards by Kenneth Gibson
will be featured in the Park National Bank Art Gallery at UC Clermont College from September 13 30.
Gibson is the director of Duggan Library at Hanover College in Hanover, Ind., where he also taught photography courses from 2003-2005. Through generous support from Hanover College, Gibson secured a leave with grant funding to travel to Europe to create his most recent body of work,
Par Avion
. Through combining original photographs and fictional narratives as part of a mixed media process, I coined the term Photovella - derived from the word,
novella
, originally meaning news of town and country life worth repeating for amusement and edification which I think appropriately describes the resulting pieces, said Gibson.
Gibson draws motivation from the traditional post card, which serves multiple roles of souvenir, collectable, and artifact. The result is a unique work of art that celebrates the inspiration and importance of travel. The installed works are suspended from the ceiling. The elegance of this arrangement is that only one side can be viewed at a time, making image and text independent, yet interconnected, so that each must first be considered on its own merit, said Gibson of his collection.
The Park National Bank Art Gallery is located in the Snyder building on the UC Clermont College campus in Batavia at 4200 Clermont College Drive. Gallery hours are Monday - Thursday 7:30 a.m. 7 p.m., Friday 7:30 a.m. 5 p.m., Saturday 8:30 a.m. 12 p.m. and closed Sundays. The exhibition is free and open to the public.
