CCTST Grand Rounds on HPV Prevention Dec. 14

The transmission, prevention and association with cancer of the human papillomavirus (HPV) are the focus of the next Center for Clinical and Translational Science and Training (CCTST) Grand Rounds, Friday, Dec. 14 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Kehoe Auditorium of the Kettering Laboratory Complex.
From 11 a.m. to noon, J. Dennis Fortenberry, MD, will present, "A lifespan sexual health perspective on prevention of human papillomavirus infections and sequelae." Fortenberry is professor of pediatrics in the adolescent medicine section of the Indiana University School of Medicine.
His talk will identify cancers associated with sexually transmitted HPV; describe non-coital modes of sexual transmission of HPV; and summarize key concepts of stigma and sexually transmitted HPV infections.
From noon to 1 p.m., Jessica Kahn, MD, will present, "Anogenital cancers and other HPV-associated disorders: maximizing the population impact of vaccines as a prevention strategy." Kahn is professor of pediatrics in the division of adolescent medicine at CCHMC.
Her talk will describe recent data on HPV vaccine efficacy, safety, and uptake; recognize the importance of community-level research to define HPV epidemiology and the population impact of HPV vaccine introduction; recognize HPV vaccine delivery challenges, including concerns about the impact of vaccination on risk perceptions and sexual behaviors; and demonstrate how existing research can be used to successfully address delivery challenges through effective communication between clinicians, parents and children.
