UC Professor of African History Publishes Book on Cameroonian Immigrants

Joseph Takougang, associate dean for faculty and academic affairs for the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences and professor of African history, uses personal stories and interviews to tell the story of the challenges faced by Cameroonian immigrants in his new book,“Cameroonian Immigrants in the United States: Between the Homeland and the Diaspora.”

The book explores the hardships that Cameroonians have faced since many left the country after the economic collapse in the mid-1980s and the democratic reforms that were implemented in the 1990s. While most stayed in Europe, others came to the United States in search for a better life. Although these Cameroonians are adapting to their new home in the United States, this book examines how they remain connected to their country of origin.
