UC Clermont Students to Share Experiences After Spring Break Trip to Portland

Twelve UC Clermont College business students recently returned from an Exploration of Business trip to Portland, Ore. Students had the opportunity to interact with key business decision makers at the headquarters of Travel Portland, KEEN, Nutcase Helmets and Pendleton Woolen Mills, and immerse themselves in the culture of Portland. This trip focused on “bringing textbooks to life” by applying vital terms and concepts learned in the classroom to a variety of business scenarios while in Portland. Join them on Tuesday, April 22, at 11:45 a.m. in Snyder Room 151 to learn more about their experience. All are welcome.

One of the goals of the trip was to learn more about the impact of light rail and the streetcar on the city of Portland and how it was implemented and received by the community. Before the students left for Portland, several of them met with John Schneider at Findlay Market in Cincinnati to discuss the streetcar project in Cincinnati. The students were able to see and walk some of the streetcar route and begin to get an understanding of the potential impact it will have on Cincinnati.

While in Portland, students were able to ride the light rail and streetcar to familiarize themselves with the system and see some of the realities behind their research prior to the trip. The students also met with Rick Gustafson, executive director of Portland Streetcar, who was able to explain and describe the positive socio-economic impact in Portland’s Pearl District and other areas, as a result of the implementation of the streetcar. He was knowledgeable of Cincinnati’s streetcar project and made a parallel to the students between the projects in the two cities.

The students now have an understanding of how crucial the Cincinnati Streetcar will be to the improvement of downtown and the Over-the-Rhine area, in terms of economic growth and tourism development. They are excited to be able to see firsthand the potential approval of the Cincinnati Uptown route, as a few are transferring soon to the Uptown Campus. They are also hopeful the light rail project will come soon to the Eastgate area as well and other suburb areas.
