Research Paper by UC Blue Ash Student Earns Placement in National Journal
Its not easy to get an article published in Radiologic Technology, the official journal of the American Society of Radiologic Technologists. Its especially challenging if you are a student who has yet to become a licensed professional.
Abbey Christman, a student at UC Blue Ash College, wrote such an effective and comprehensive paper about communicating with elderly patients that her professors thought it was worthy of a submission to the journal. They were all a bit surprised when it was actually selected for publication in the May/June issue.
Although the Radiologic Technology editor welcomes manuscripts from students, very few students take the time to follow through with the rigor of editing their manuscript and converting it to the American Medical Association format its a lot of work, said Julie Gill, associate professor and chair of the Allied Health Department at UC Blue Ash College.
What is even more impressive is that this was the first paper Christman wrote as a student in the Radiologic Technology program. She says she focused on the topic of communicating with elderly patients for two reasons, I previously took a psychology class about adulthood aging that really made an impact on me and was a source of inspiration, said Christman. Also, I was raised by my grandparents, so I have a lot of experience communicating with older adults.
Gill adds that Christmans writing style provided a great reminder regarding appropriate communication with the elderly without sounding judgmental. You can

Abbey earned her associate degree in Radiologic Technology this spring and is now pursuing her bachelors in the Radiation Science Technology program at UC Blue Ash. Since submitting the article she has earned national certification and state licensure, and is employed as a Radiologic Technologist at Bethesda North Hospital. She plans to eventually work in the IT/Communications side of medical imaging.
