'Build Her a Myth' Featured in Park National Bank Art Gallery at UC Clermont

At first glance, the University of Cincinnati Clermont College Art Gallery appears to be holding a fashion exhibit with beautifully designed gowns. On close examination, the dresses are intricately made entirely from novels. Build Her a Myth, by Carrie Ann Schumacher, will be featured in the Park National Bank Art Gallery at UC Clermont College from Aug. 1-27. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

Carrie Ann Schumacher, a master's of fine arts in studio art graduate of Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Ill., and current adjunct instructor at Waubonsee College, Sugar Grove, Ill., exhibits romance novels repurposed into beautiful dresses. The works are the result of an art school assignment to make a piece that discussed the concept of “invisibility.”

“This project made me question the visible versus the invisible within my own life, and in the lives of other American women. I considered the roles that romance novels, the beauty industry and the fashion world play within our culture; the three share definite commonalities, as they all thrive on fantasy and define femininity for many. I combined these worlds into one unwearable and fragile garment as a way to speak to the visibility and invisibility of different aspects of womanhood,” said Schumacher.

The Park National Bank Art Gallery is located in the Snyder building on the UC Clermont College campus in Batavia at 4200 Clermont College Drive. Summer gallery hours are Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.; and Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. The gallery is closed weekends.
