Free Patient-, Community-Focused Events Nov. 1

To showcase advances in research, screening and the future of diagnostic and treatment options for breast and lung cancers, the University of Cincinnati (UC) Cancer Institute's Comprehensive Breast Cancer and Lung Cancer Centers will host events to introduce the scientists and clinicians behind it all to patients and interested members of the community.

"The Breast Cancer Journey: A Snapshot of Research, Evolving Care and Wellness" and "Hope. Fight. Breathe." symposiums are both being held Saturday, Nov. 1, and are free and open to the public.

"Hope. Fight. Breathe." Lung Cancer Symposium

This patient-focused event, being held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Daniel Drake Center for Post-Acute Care, 151 W. Galbraith Road, will focus on advancements in lung cancer research, screening, treatment, survivorship and stress management. The day's activities will also include a panel discussion which will include survivors' stories and a Q&A session.

"This is the first year we're offering a community-centered symposium to connect our skilled team and lung cancer survivors to other patients and the public who are interested in learning more about lung cancer research, screening and treatments within the institute," says Sandra Starnes, MD, co-director of the Comprehensive Lung Cancer Center, associate professor of surgery at the UC College of Medicine and UC Health thoracic surgeon.

"We're excited for this opportunity to raise awareness about a cancer that kills more people in the United States than any other cancer and to show progress that is being made right here in Cincinnati," continues John Morris, MD, co-director of the center, a member of the Cincinnati Cancer Center, professor in the division of hematology oncology at the UC College of Medicine and a UC Health oncologist.

A light breakfast and boxed lunch will be provided. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

"The Breast Cancer Journey: A Snapshot of Research, Evolving Care and Wellness"

The second annual event sponsored by the UC Cancer Institute's Comprehensive Breast Cancer Center will be held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Kingsgate Marriott Conference Center, 151 Goodman Drive.

During this conference, patients and the public will have a chance to ask questions of the UC Cancer Institute breast cancer research team as well as witness an interactive presentation of food as medicine with integrative oncology specialists. Additional topics will include personalized medicine, new breast imaging research, environmental estrogens and the risk of breast cancer, newly discovered pathways as possible targets for clinical trials along with updates on clinical trials and the regional breast cancer registry.

Focused breakout sessions for participants will include mind-body medicine, acupuncture and stress reduction.

"This is the second year of this event, and we're really excited to bring patients, their families and members of our community back to connect with and learn from our interdisciplinary teams," says Elyse Lower, MD, director of the Comprehensive Breast Cancer Center, professor in the division of hematology oncology at the UC College of Medicine and a UC Health physician. "We are the only true cancer center in the city that conducts cutting-edge research that could lead to innovative therapies for patients with breast cancer.

"This provides an opportunity to educate the community about the unique services, including science and patient care, being offered right in your back yard."

A light breakfast and boxed lunch will be provided. Parking will be available for attendees in the Kingsgate Marriott garage. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.
