Healthy Relationships Week, Feb. 9-13, Features Events Related to Title IX, Consent and More

The University of Cincinnati, along with colleges and universities across the country, is continually working to assess and improve how the community addresses sexual assaults on campus, including an emphasis on education and prevention in the form of advocacy, training and resources.

These efforts include a series of outreach events, from Feb. 9-13, by a variety of campus offices and groups in order to foster the safety campus environment and healthy relationships for all students.

Sponsors and participants include UC Public Safety, the Division of Student Affairs and Services, the LGBTQ Center, UC-Blue Ash College Office of Student Life, UC-Clermont College Student Life and Activities, Student Government, Fraternity and Sorority Life, Office of University Judicial Affairs, and Office of the Provost.

Healthy Relationships Week events include

Monday, February 9

9-11 a.m.:

The Title IX Office, in partnership with the

#UCItsOnUs campaign

, will be at UC-Blue Ash College encouraging students and employees to commit to healthy relationships and a culture of consent. Location: UC-Blue Ash College Bleecker Street Café.

Tuesday, February 10

5-6 p.m.:

Information table in partnership with the #UCItsOnUs campaign and Student Government-sponsored forum on UC’s Student Code of Conduct. Location: Tangeman University Center Cinema.

7-10 p.m.:

As part of UC’s

Greek Week

, during the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Service Event, the Title IX Office will be working with fraternity and sorority members to commit to healthy relationship and a culture of consent and sign the Greek Life banner. Location: Tangeman University Center Great Hall.

Wednesday, February 11

5:30-6:30 p.m.:

The Title IX Coordinator will discuss “Consent, Healthy Relationships and UC." Location: Tangeman University Center, Room 415 A&B.

7-8 p.m.:

UC Racial Awareness Program (RAPP) will host a discussion led by Jyl Shaffer, UC’s Title IX coordinator, as part of the RAPP  curriculum on sex, gender, and identity. Location: University Pavilion, Room 310.

11 a.m.-1 p.m.:

The Title IX Office, in partnership with the #UCItsOnUs campaign, will be at UC-Clermont College encouraging students and employees to commit to healthy relationships and a culture of consent. Location: UC-Clermont College Snyder Building.

Thursday, February 12

6:30-7:30 p.m..:

The LGBTQ Center and GenderBloc will facilitate, along with the Title IX Coordinator, a “Queer and Consent” discussion. Location: Tangeman University Center , Room 415 A&B.

Friday, February 13

Noon-1 p.m.:

Information table in partnership with the #UCItsOnUs campaign at forum discussion on UC’s Student Code of Conduct, hosted by the Office of Judicial Affairs. Location: Tangeman University Center Cinema.

FIND OUT MORE ON TITLE IX at UC

This focus on education and prevention is key in combating sexual harassment, misconduct and assault. Education efforts already held this academic year include

• The #UCItsOnUs campaign with speakers Lynn Rosenthal (Nov. 21) and Wagatwe Wanjuki (Jan. 29) and an upcoming speaker on March 3.

• Student efforts related to Title IX, such as a Consent Cultural Campaign carried out by students affiliated with DAAPCares, RECLAIM Peer Advocates and Student Government. • More than 5,000 incoming first-year, transfer and international students took online training that highlighted the role alcohol often plays in terms of sexual assault. That training also focused on accountability and consequences, laws and policies governing sexual assault. That online training will be required of all UC students next year.

The resources include UC’s Title IX website as well as 

• UC’s Counseling and Psychological Services Center (CAPS) serves as a 24/7 resource to students in crisis due to sexual harassment, misconduct or assault. Reach CAPS 24/7 by calling 513-556-0648. Two new counselors – Anusha Zechella and Abby Lewis – have joined UC’s staff in order to serve, among other students, those who are survivors of sexual assault.

• UC Public Safety has a Special Investigations Unit which includes an Inspector with special training in sexual assault, domestic violence, and stalking as well as a soon to be hired Coordinator of Victim Services. UCPD can be reached at 513-556-1111.

• UC's RECLAIM Peer Advocates deliver support to survivors of sexual and gender-based violence, providing advocacy, awareness and education around these issues. For services contact the Sexual Assault Survivor Advocate at 513-556-4328.

• In addition to a new Title IX Coordinator, other recent additions to UC’s campus community also bring Title IX experience that enhances the expertise already available. New members of UC’s community with Title IX experience include Denine Rocco, Dean of Students; Chief of UC Police and Director of Public Safety Jason Goodrich.

• By next summer, UC will have plans in place for campus climate surveys, bystander training as well as training for faculty and staff.
