Scholarship to Honor Late Professor Emeritus of History
Herbert Shapiro was a historian and member of the University of Cincinnati department of history faculty for 35 years before passing away on Oct. 17, 2012 at the age of 83.
Shapiro was a scholar, educator, mentor and active participant in both the university community and the larger society. He helped to pioneer the study of African American history as an academic discipline, and he made vital contributions to the field.
In March 1965, Shapiro participated in the historic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. A year later, he accepted a faculty position at the University of Cincinnati, where he remained until his retirement in 2001. Shapiros fierce commitment to civil rights animated his personal and professional life, and he had a profound impact both inside and outside of the classroom.
In January of this year, Herberts wife, Judith, generously contributed a five-figure gift to establish a scholarship in his honor. The Herbert Shapiro Scholarship in African American History will support graduate students in the department of history. And while Mrs. Shapiro has provided the seed funding and pledged to contribute the scholarship on an annual basis, additional funding is needed in order to permanently endow and begin awarding the Shapiro Scholarship.
