eLearning backpack project

After successfully implementing the eLearning Backpack Project with 10 faculty “backpackers,” UC’s Center for Excellence in eLearning is ready to continue the program for the second cohort.
The Backpack Project offers faculty the unique opportunity to fully leverage the new services available in Canopy by providing a backpack full of eLearning tools. The Center for Excellence in eLearning strives to provide the most innovative technological tools to enhance the experience for faculty and students. The next cohort will receive an Apple TV and iPad Air, according to Instructional Technologist Mike Mitchum. Other tools under consideration are: Camtasia Studio Software, Swivl and the Wacom Cintiq interactive monitor and tablet.
Faculty from all UC colleges are eligible to apply for the next cohort. The application will become available online in early June, and applicants will have two to three weeks to apply. The rubric used to score applications as well as an updated list of the program requirements will also be available.
Mitchum said the next cohort will include backpacks for at least 25 faculty, although, the Center may distribute more. Faculty are able to keep their backpack tools, as the program was designed so that each group of backpackers can mentor the next one.
While the first cohort made a number of great discoveries during the project, the Center may have gained even more from the faculty as they developed their own originative uses for the tools to enhance their students’ educational experiences.
“We want [the backpack program] to be saturated with and infiltrated into the colleges such that there’s a common experience, so that the faculty members can talk to each other and share that experience,” Mitchum said.
Mitchum said the eLearning center is also working to develop a backpack project for adjunct faculty as well as a cluster application. The cluster application will be designed so that groups of faculty working on the same project can receive some of their own tools and share some with other project members.
