CEAS-CAECM Students Triumph Gold, Silver and Bronze Honors

The Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering and Construction Management (CAECM) students are all members of the Construction Competition Club, a subgroup of the Construction Student Association.

At the 2015 ASC Estimating Competition, students divide amongst four competition categories, including: 1) Heavy Highway Regional, 2) Commercial Construction Regional, 3) Electrical National, and 4) Preconstruction National. Each category is assigned a real corporate sponsor who provides information on a real-world construction project located around the country. From there, the teams have 24 hours to devise a plan, submit a project proposal and present their final product to a panel of judges.

UC’s commercial construction team’s captain—senior construction management student, Matt Morgann—kept the team’s morale high as they prospered through the fast-paced competition. The team’s corporate sponsor, The Walsh Group, assigned this category’s teams with the task of developing a proposal for a real-world senior living facility.

Morgann proves his knack for time management and leadership skills under time constraints, a crucial skill in the construction management industry. He reflects, “Before we arrived in Chicago, the team and I strategized our areas of strengths and divided up our individual roles. Luckily, many of the team members had prior experience in developing proposals through our co-op rotations.”

Their team name, Kenobi Construction, was created on behalf of their corporate sponsor’s theme for the year—Star Wars. UC’s team was assigned to the infamous character Obi Won Kenobi. Hence, Kenobi Construction was born and experienced real-world construction proposal skills at this year’s ASC Estimating Competition.

Aside from the 24-hour competition, CAECM students took advantage of the small career fair on day one (Oct. 14) which exhibited all of the corporate sponsors. On the last day (Oct. 17) the students participated in the awards ceremony.;

Congratulations to these 24 CAECM civil engineering and construction management students who collectively placed top honors:
