UC Interim President Davenport Names Interim Provost
The University of Cincinnati Interim President Beverly J. Davenport announced today the appointment of Peter E. Landgren as Interim Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. Landgren, who has been Dean of the College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) since 2011, will start his new role on July 15.
As Dean of UCs college that boasts more than half of UCs top-10 programs ranked by U.S. News & World Report, Landgren has been a champion for student and faculty diversity, community and university engagement, interdisciplinary collaborations and university service on every level, Interim President Davenport said.
As Interim Provost, Landgren will oversee more than 44,000 students and over 4,200 faculty, across 13 colleges, the Graduate School and a consortium of state-of-the-art libraries. The Office of the Provost oversees all of their operations, and extends beyond that to manage academic and student services.
According to Davenport, Landgren is a skilled administrator. He is a former chair of the Council of Deans as well as a past member of the Presidents Cabinet and the UC Foundation Board. Landgren administers a record $110 million endowment that helps recruit students and faculty from around the world. He initiated the CCM Infrastructure Project, which will usher in $15 million in renovations to college facilities in the coming years.
Landgren led the recent CCM partnership with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (CSO), which received $900,000 in grant funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to pilot the groundbreaking CSO/CCM Diversity Fellowship Program Bravos Without Barriers! The program is designed to recruit graduate students from populations that are historically underrepresented in classical music and is already garnering attention among leaders throughout the music world.
In addition, Landgren has strengthened other key relationships in Cincinnati, such as building partnerships with the School for Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA), the Freestore Foodbank and the Whiz Kids Music Program in conjunction with the City Gospel Mission.
Both CCM and UC have made great strides in recent years. I am honored to have this opportunity to work with all of this universitys fine colleges, and their respective deans, to sustain that forward momentum, Landgren said. I cannot thank Dr. Davenport enough for her confidence in my leadership abilities. As Interim Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, I look forward to supporting her as Interim President in a unified vision for UC. Working together, we will continue to build upon our latest accomplishments and achieve even greater successes in the coming year.
The Thomas James Kelly Professor of Music, Landgren is a UC alumnus who has helped recruit more than 35 new tenure-track faculty members to CCM and provided leadership for the Office of the Provosts Cluster Hiring Initiative for the Digital Media Collaborative. He currently holds positions on the Board of Directors of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Opera, and the American Classical Music Hall of Fame.
Prior to UC, Peter served as conservatory director and professor of music at Baldwin-Wallace College and served 26 years on the faculty of the Peabody Conservatory at The Johns Hopkins University (JHU). From 2005 to 2006, he was Interim Director of the Peabody Institute, and twice received the Excellence in Teaching Award from the JHU Alumni Association. He is an accomplished musician who spent 29 years with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.
