UC and University of Bordeaux Launch Collaborative Aero-System Operations Degree Program
At the Farnborough International Airshow taking place this week, the unique dual enrollment program, centered on the University of Cincinnati master's of engineering degree and the University of Bordeaux international university diploma, will be announced. This announcement follows the agreement signing in Bordeaux by University of Cincinnati College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) Dean, Teik C. Lim and University of Bordeaux (UBx) President Manuel Tunon de Lara.
Under this new agreement, as of September 2017, students may concurrently pursue and graduate with both a UC master's of engineering degree and a UBx international university diploma in aero-systems operations (AESOP). The one-year program brings together UBx expertise in aeronautical maintenance and operations with UC expertise in aerospace propulsion and systems, as well as excellence in interdisciplinary research from both universities.
Students will follow their fall semester in Cincinnati and their spring semester in Bordeaux to obtain an experiential-based, personalized degree. As graduates, they will be skilled engineers with a wide-range of professional capabilities ready to excel within the realm of aircraft design and life-cycle management.
As one of the UC-UBx flagship collaboration projects, AESOP was originally part of a larger institutional vision spearheaded by a UC delegation to UBx led by UC Interim President Beverly Davenport in fall 2015.
UBx and UC are both at the forefront of education and research, making our strategic partnership a natural fit. Our universities wanted to provide this aeronautics opportunity to engineering students around the world and both institutions have worked diligently to make it a reality. Seeing AESOP come to fruition only further affirms that, together, we will stimulate ongoing innovation, said Davenport.
The
global launch ceremony
for the new collaborative degree program will be held at the

, the ceremony will feature presentations by: UC CEAS Dean Lim, UBx Deputy Vice-President for International Relations Laurent Servant, Makino President Don Lane, ENAC (Ecole Nationale de l'Aviation Civile) Project Coordinator Giovanni Simonetti, Head of
UC CEAS Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics (AEEM)
Paul Orkwis, and UC CEAS AEEM Professor Kelly Cohen.
Farnborough is a biennial event combining a major trade exhibition for the aerospace and defense industries with a public airshow. In 2014, it welcomed over 100,000 visitors (representing 53 countries) and exhibitors from 39 countries. In 2016, a 71 percent international participation is expected.
UC CEAS Dean Lim said The collaborative degree program shows a level of commitment to the development of technical and professional skills that would impress any aerospace engineering employer. Students and potential employers benefit from the knowledge gained from faculties at two top institutions. With the increasing globalization of the technical workforce, degrees that span institutions and provide an international perspective are particularly valuable.
Olivier Puissant, UBx Aeronautic Program Manager, added Our commitment is to provide training which suits the needs and expectations of stakeholders in the aeronautics industry. This is why our industrial partners are involved in every step of the design and creation of our courses. To remain at the forefront of technological developments, AESOP is strongly involved in joint research projects regarding topics related to Aircraft Lifecycle Management.
