Free Symposium Showcases Latest in Lung Cancer Research, Treatment

To showcase advances in lung cancer research, screening and treatment, the University of Cincinnati Cancer Institute's Lung Cancer Center will host a free community event Oct. 1, aimed at educating patients on these topics and more.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death and the second most common cancer among both men and women in the U.S., which is why education is so important, says Sandra Starnes, MD, co-director of the Lung Cancer Center, associate professor of surgery at the UC College of Medicine and UC Health thoracic surgeon.

"This community-centered symposium will help to inform patients, their families and even just interested members of the general public about the ways we're working to fight this disease locally at the UC Cancer Institute," says Starnes.

"Hope! Fight! Breathe!" being held from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Kingsgate Marriott Conference Center, 151 Goodman Drive, will update attendees on the latest in lung cancer research, screening, evaluation, treatment, survivorship and stress management. The day's activities will also include a panel discussion with experts.

Presentations will center on risk factors, particularly for women, screening, ways integrative medicine can help, advances in surgical, chemotherapy and radiation, and personalized treatment for lung cancer.

"We're excited for this opportunity to raise awareness about a cancer with such devastating impact and to show that progress that is being made right here in Cincinnati," adds John Morris, MD, co-director of the Lung Cancer Center, a member of the Cincinnati Cancer Center, professor in the division of hematology oncology at the UC College of Medicine and a UC Health oncologist.

A light breakfast and boxed lunch will be provided. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required. For more information, contact Kelly Hummel at kelly.hummel@uc.edu or 513-558-2030.
